Average rebuilds cost $3000. For a swap with a new/remanufactured one slightly higher, as they tend to cost $2000 or more just for the unit, plus labor to R&R and misc shop supplies.
If it's automatic, the best thing to do is buy a completely rebuilt transmission, and swap it out. Transmission shops will want to rebuild everything, but that's really not the right way to go. A Guaranteed transmission will cost you about $600 more or less. It costs about $500 to swap them out more or less. It takes a whole day to do it, and it requires special equipment. It might be a good idea to get a new torque converter, too, and that's about $150+.
A transmission shop will charge you about $3000 to rebuild yours. It's all a rip-off as far as I'm concerned, and if it goes bad on you... you are at their mercy to fix it, and in my case, I had to have another shop do the whole thing all over again, and I was out $3000 with no recourse.
