When an employee fills in their W-4 with a check next to the 'exempt' box.....then the employer can only deduct Medicare and Social Security.

CONTACT IRS: this sounds like a scam, how do you claim your self exempt. No one is exempt from income tax. I am exempt and they still take tax out and return it in April after I file a return. I paid in $3129.00 and IRS returned it to me in April. Some thing sounds squirrely here.

Age is not a factor in filing taxes. Income is what determines filing taxes. And you need to file your taxes because you had a job. You are not exempt. You have to pay taxes. Unless you are in some special class that allows you to claim exempt, you have no business claiming that you are exempt from paying taxes. Don't make excuses for being 17. Hire an accountant to straighten it out.

First, if you're only 17, then you should not have put exempt. Being 17 doesn't make you exempt, and nearly guarantees that you aren't.

Second, even if you put exempt, they must take out FICA, social security tax and medicare tax. If they took only those taxes, then you can't get back anything that they took, because you never get back those taxes. If they also took out "federal" or "income tax", and the W-2 doesn't say so, and you asked for a corrected one, and they refused to give it to you, then you call the IRS and tell them. They will either get the employer to give you a corrected one, send you a substitute form to use to file without the W-2, or both.

Even if you put "exempt", you still have to pay Social Security and Medicare and you do not get back those taxes.

Look at Box 2 of your W2. If it is zero or blank, you can't get anything back from the IRS because you didn't pay anything in.

What taxes did they withhold? You owe Social Security and Medicare taxes in any case.

Being "only 17" DOES NOT make you exempt from paying taxes! If you have earned income you STILL must pay taxes on it.

There are different kinds of taxes.

All employees pay certain taxes such as medicare tax and social security tax. There also might be unemployment tax, short-term disability or other taxes based on state or local law.

Does your paystub state that you had income tax withholding? This is the tax that is related to being "exempt". This is also the only tax that is refundable, if there is an overpayment.

Reading between the lines, I would guess that you paid other employment taxes but not income taxes.

There is more than one type of tax that gets withheld from your paycheck.

Federal income tax varies and would generally be $0 if you put exempt on yoru W4 forms when you started the job. This is shown in box #2 on your W2 form. If your paystubs show withholding called "FEDERAL INCOME TAX" and that money isn't showing up in box #2 then demand a corrected W2 form.

But "Taxes" is a general term that also includes things like social security tax and medicare.

Social security tax is 6.2% flat rate withheld from every dollar you earn. This should appear in box #4 on your W2 form but is just for reference. You don't get that money refunded on a tax return.

Medicare tax is similar, but the rate is 1.45% and it shows up in Box #6. Again you don't get a refund of this money, its just there for reference.

There could also be other taxes such as state income tax, state L&I (Labor & Industries) taxes, etc.

So just because "taxes" were withheld doesn't mean you will get a tax refund. Go look at the paystub from your last paycheck in 2018 and look at the year-to-date totals, be sure to pay attention to the categories or name of each deduction - do they match your W2 form?

At age 17 with a part time job and "exempt" status its very likely that you did not have any federal income tax withheld, and that your federal tax liability is $0, so you would get no tax refund.

Remember that a tax refund is getting your own money back if you paid more than you owe. Its like making a $15 purchase with a $20 bill, and the cashier gives you $5 back. Its not a bonus, its your own money that you get back because you overpaid.

A tax refund is just getting your change back from the government if you paid more tax than you owed.

And in your case, its more like you walked into a store, looked around, left without buying anything and never exchanged any money with the cashier. You never paid the IRS any tax, you don't owe them any tax, and they don't owe you any change.
