I work as a RMN for a company which is a nursing agency. They offer me shifts and I take them if I want the work. I took some shifts for this week. One for tomorrow 12hours on a sex offenders unit as unit manager. My Dad who is 69 had a stroke this morning and as I am his only family in this country, I called my agency to tell them with 24 hours notice that my dad had a stroke and I could not go to the shift and could somebody cover it for me. I was met by the response that a relatives illness does not count and if I did not go, I would be fined £50 for taking time off. I got angry and said that what was I meant to do leave him ill and alone. She was really snotty and said it was company policy. I threatened my notice and she said that was my choice. I said I did not need this and hung up. What laws cover me if I supply proof of his admittance to hospital? I am so angry I cant think, worried as well, this seems so inhuman
Update:as i do not go to the shift, they want some return on the fee. If I work tomorrow, I earn £250, they get paid £350, so they earn £100 from me working, they want half of this as I cant go

wow, in the united states if your parent becomes ill then you have the right to take time off. Even take a few days off as long as you were to give a few hours ahead of time notice. You gave plenty of time and if I were you I would look for a new job.
Is this common in England? Did your father have a bad stroke?
Wow. that's chilly. I even have the comparable difficulty with my brother. He has ability of lawyer with my mom who's amazingly sick and lives quite a protracted distance from me. I by no ability hear approximately something and that i'm annoying it may be too previous due quicker or later. i might civilly ask them once you spot them (out of the well-being middle room yet in a independent section) in the event that they could see greater healthful to tell you as quickly as something occurs on your loved ones. If not, according to risk you're able to talk with a scientific professional or nurse and grant them with your touch education for the destiny. good success and that i wish you Dad gets greater valuable quite quickly!
Sweetie, I am so sorry about your Dad first of all.....That is your first and most important priority of course....I think that your workplace is terribly wrong for taking such attitude with you....I just can not understand how they could "charge you" when you have a family emergency on your hands, and not to mention that you did give notice to them that you could not work your shift...Unfortunately, I do not know what laws apply....where you live...I would definitely find out though to as what your rights are and also bring in something from your Dad's doctor to prove that you indeed had to take care of your Dad in his time of need.... I pray for your father to get well soon and for you in handling all that you are sweetness....God Bless...(((HUGS)))...Linda
Surely no one can fine you, no matter what the job or no matter what the company. I think they are probably allowed to refuse to give you sick pay if that was in the contract but surely they can't actively take money from you? There must be some sort of collective bargaining laws that prevent this kind of atrocity.
You are the kind of employer they can do anything they want,so chill.
