The heat pump is in defrost mode when the condenser fan stops, the reversing valve reverses and the heat strips come on. It is set by time or temperature. When the defrost cycle ends, the c. fan starts, the call for heat strips ends and the reversing valve reverses, again.
if its not in defrost mode it could be a bad fan cap bad motor...possible a bad circuit board....alot of brands come set for an hour in defrost.....if its freezing outside its prob defrost mode.....the outdoor fan removes heat so when the unit is freezing up it kills the fan so the heat will defrost the unit
