We have one dog and I love him. But my parents and sister want a second dog and I’m not all for that. I feel like it would take away from having one special dog. How do I tell hem this and convince them to not get another?
I think majority rules here, and 2 dog families often work out. Your 'special dog' would continue to be special to you and since dogs tend to gravitate to one person within a family, it means that dogs loyalty would become more and more yours. It would give your dog a canine companion, which is not a bad thing. Be sure to request the new dog be a rescue and to bring your current dog in for 'introductions' with any potential new pack mate before they adopt to make sure the dogs are compatible.
Sometimes it's good to have two dogs... i guess that, if your family wants a second dog, you'll see how it works out. I don't think it's a bad thing. It could give your dog a bit of extra companionship when no one else is around. dogs are social creatures
I have never just kept one of anything. They need companionship of their own kind. Dogs, cats, ferrets, goats, horses need a companion of their own species. I never want a dog or any animal to feel lonely.
For the last 50 yrs or so, I have kept 5 dogs at a time. Limit set my zoning. Rescuing large & extra large dogs.
You can't. Parents house, their rules, their decision, if they want another family dog, deal with it or move out.
Even though it's preferable that everyone be in agreement, ultimately the final decision belongs to the adults, minors can't own property, dogs are property. However if you are an adult, then take your dog and move out, problem solved.
You simply move your lips and speak and tell them it will interfere with your dogs training. As one will play you off against the other : And vice versa .... Because thats exactly what could and probably would happen also
Well for starters, a second dog may well not be what your existing dog wants, or will accept. However, this is a family decision, with your parents making the final decision I'm afraid. We humans may like the idea of two dogs 'for company' but fact is it doesn't always work out that way!!
That's too bad. It's not your decision to make. Your parents and your sister want a dog, you live under your parents roof, your parents pay the bills and it would be your parents dog not yours, just like your other dog is your parents dog, not yours. Your parents want a second dog and they have every right to get a second dog.
Advice? Accept that they want something you don't. You're outnumbered, and two of those out numbering you are your parents, who get to say what happens in their house because they pay the bills.
Be Generous to your dog, that is if you truly love him. When you are gone, or when you are busy with other things, then 2 dogs can keep each other company... so they are not bored or lonely.

Tough....If your parents want another dog then its their prerogative to do so.
Many families have 2 or even 3 dogs and surely there is enough of you in your family to give two dogs equal care and affection.
As long as the two dogs are "compatible" there should be no problems.
