I'll have to disagree with your statement. I believe knowing what you CAN do is just as, if not more, important. Imagine, if you will, a curious and impressionable child (most children fit this catagory). Now imagine that this child is told "No! You can't [fill in the blank]" several times a day by family members or some other type of authority figure(s) for 15 to 20 years. If all this child hears is a list of what he/she can't do, this child will inevitably come to believe that nothing is do-able, and as a result, will very likely stop trying and become bored and depressed. However, if given viable options and the encouragement to learn and grow (emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, etc.), this child will have more of chance to become a functional and relatively happy human being.
This should apply to both - the concept of what a person is allowed or not allowed to do (because of societal pressure) AND to the knowledge of what is or is not humanly possible in any circumstance. On the specific subject of approprate behavior while courting (dating), a modified version of my answer just might apply. I don't see why it wouldn't. :)
