Japanese help: What's the proper usage/translation of どんな〜でも?

I was taught that どんな means "what kind of" as in 「どんな本が好きですか。」 but I came across this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sdm2CEhW7A that says 「For you どんなときも きっと笑顔あげたい」and it was translated as "No matter when, I'll always give you a smile"

Should I really be thinking of どんな in both these contexts as "whatever the..."? I couldn't find much but searching around I saw this pattern appear as "どんな〜も" and "どんな〜でも" Do they mean the same thing exactly? Also what do も/でも function as in these sentences? I really only know でも to mean "but" and も to mean "also" or a suffix to make things all encompassing like in 何も. I know they're not functioning in those ways, so what meaning do they really add the the sentence?

The more literal the explanation the better. My goal has always been to learn how to use/ manipulate Japanese and not just repeat it. Thanks in advance for answers!
