Well you see, I am from South America, and I want to apply to a univeristy in the States.
So here is the question:
For instance, the attendance cost for MIT is:
Cost to attend
The estimated price for 2012-13 for undergraduates is $57,010
This breaks down as follows:
Tuition and Fees $42,050
Housing and Dining $12,188
Books and Personal Expenses $2,772
Total price for MIT undergraduates: $57,010
Average cost for a student with an MIT scholarship
$24,410
So this price : $57,010, for how many moths does it cover, and if it is a semester, how long is a semeter in the states, Im not sure, but Ive heard its about 6 months. And this price, do I have to pay it monthly or just per semeter.
I'll be glad to hear you answers, thank you (:

1. Make sure that is for international students, not American students. There are often differences.
2. That's per school year only - @ end-August to mid-May. Either add costs of going home for summers, or summer school, or a place to live over summer, etc. Staying over summer can easily add $10,000 for living expenses, short-term rents, eating, sightseeing, etc, not counting school costs if you go to summer school.
3. They never budget enough for all living & personal expenses, especially for foreign students. You need health insurance and pay for all medical, dental & vision care you need - including if you get sick, hit by a car, whatever! Books is an average, and textbooks are usually higher than average for your science classes, engineering, & similar technology-related courses. Plus you always have extras! You'll need a computer, software, high-speed internet access, printer. No student in the US survives without going out for pizza. Costs of toiletries, etc, keep going up. Laundry can set you back at least $10 a week!
4. You're from South America? Unless you live in Ushuaia or high in the Andes, you don't know from cold weather. You will need a minimum of $2000 just for winter clothes or else freeze to death. Boston & Cambridge area can get some nasty winter weather, blizzards, etc.
5. International students have special expenses which citizens do not have: passport, visa, transportation, etc.
6. Don't count on any financial aid. It's scarce and competition is extreme. Furthermore, MIT recruits the students it really wants, e.g. winners of international competitions in sciences, math, etc. If they want the person badly enough, they will offer some scholarship funding. If you are not in that category, don't count on financial aid. That # they give "with scholarship" sounds very suspiciously low anyway!
Best to plan on nothing less than $75,000 a year for MIT as a foreign student. Some students (especially if they get an apartment instead of dorm) burn through $100,000 a year there. Any shortage of funds can lead to disaster in a hurry. Especially if you ever had any kind of emergency (& those happen more often than most people expect).
do not assume as an international student you will get any financial aid or that much.
Cost is per school year. that is two semesters
YOu must prove you can pay it before you can get a student visa.
US students can pay monthly or per semester. That may not be the case for international students
Realize that MIT accepts very few international students. You must be OUTSTANDING. One of the best students in your country.
You need to take the SAT exam and score 700+ on each subject. go to www.collegeboard.org
