My local bike store gave me two options on how to sort out my broken bike chain.
Either repair the old one (it hasn't rusted) for £7
Or get a new one for £10 and get it installed for £5
Which is the better option and why?

Chain technology has improved over the years. New chains are much better.
The old chain is likely to be worn out at the points where the inner plates meet the pins. You will not see it until it break.
A new chain with power link is the way to go. You can install it yourself but will need a chain tool to cut it to size. It will still be cheaper than having it installed.
If you can afford it, then go with the new chain option. That way you will know that the chain is in good working order. If the existing chain broke, then you can count on it breaking again pretty soon.
Take care of the new chain and it should last you a long time.
As my Dad once told me years ago... "Son, sometimes it only cost a quarter extra to go first class."
How old is the old chain? If there's a possibility it has even slightly stretched out or worn out - get the new one. And lube that new chain more frequently!! Chains should be lubed about every 100 miles & cleaned and re-lubed when needed.
In all my years - I have never had a chain break or fail.
Time for a new chain.
Buy a new master link for half (if not less) than the repair job & fix it your bloody self.
