I googled with your question and turned up a pretty good answer here at Yahoo!Answers. There was also even some sort of AP flashcard, but I didn't really get the answer it gave.

The one thing I would add to the answer at the first link is that blended traits appear blended because they are typically multigenic. Thus, an offspring gets a mix of alleles of several genes from its parents to generate a 'blended' trait like height or hair color. The individual alleles, of course, are particulate and constant, and do not blend.

For example, I think mice have something like 14 genes that control coat color. An offspring would have maternal and paternal alleles at each of those loci, creating a vast number of potential coat color combinations even though the alleles themselves remained unaltered.

Driven both, owned both. It's not a factor in buying a particular car for me. But a manual in big city traffic is horrible. Parking in a big city with a manual is horrible. Mountain driving with a manual is horrible. Automatic is just easier. I have an automatic now. But I don't know, with the $4.00 per gal gas prices in Chicago now, a manual would be cheaper.
