In Spanish, any trick to remember when to use Es vs Está?
My textbook tells me that "es" is for a description, and "está" is for a condition. Great, but I have no idea how to use that rule when I see the words.
Is there some way to help get this right?

Es ----> Is used to say how a person/place looks like.
Ella es hermosa ---> She's pretty.
El es mayor que yo ---> He's older than I am.
Aquel parque es enorme ---> That park is big.
Está ---> Is used to say:
1. Where a person/place is.
2. What someone is doing.
3. How he/she/it is being.
4. It's also used with passive voice.
1. Ella está en su casa ---> She's at her home.
2. El está comiendo ---> He's eating.
3. He's being nice ---> El está siendo agradable.
4. Mi casa está siendo pintada ---> My house is being painted.
I don't know very well how to explain it to you, but está also would be the transformation of es to become a present simple sentence to a present countinuos sentence. For ex.
Ella es amable = She's kind. (She is = Ella es)
Ella está siendo amable = She's being kind. (She is being = Ella está siendo)
You use es for saying what something IS. Es=Is "ES una cancion" "It IS a song" You use esta more with a situation... "Esta mal" "It is bad"..... It's kind of hard to explain...
1. It is the truth= "ES la verdad"
2. That's fine "ESTA bien"
3.It is a giraffe= "ES una jirafa"
4. It is easy= "ESTA facil"

El es Muy guapo - He is very handsome.
El es Carlos - He is Carlos.

Ex: Esta
A donde esta Jennifer? - Where is Jennifer?
Jennifer esta en la casa - Jennifer is at home
Esta no es mi casa. - This is not my house
Como esta mama? - How are you mom?
En donde esta mi Carro? - Where is my car at?
esta is for location and emotion es is for physical description and stuff like that
The only trick is to know what the difference in meaning is.
You use "estar" when you are referring to a transitory state, something circumstantial that can change (to be happy, to be standing, to be quiet,...).
"Ser" describes something inherent to whatever you're describing (being blonde, being deaf, being tall).
