The total cost of building, launching, landing and operating the rovers on the surface for the primary mission was US$820 million.
The cost to bring gold back would be at least ten times that amount, but more likely 50 to 100 times. Lifting 500 tons of metal off Mars would require a huge amount of fuel and technology.
The entire process would need to be robotic because we have no way of keeping a human alive for the journey. If we could keep him alive, it would multiply the cost of the 22 month round trip by at least 3 times (All of these estimates are my own - you may choose to adjust them).
-----------
The cost of retrieving the gold would cost about 5 to 10 times its market value.
That's about 453 tonnes of gold, or about 11% of the worlds use of gold in one year. It might be worth $22 billion dollars, if you sold it correctly at current prices. On the other hand, it would cost about $27 billion dollars to bring a million pounds of anything from Mars to Earth. Doesn't sound like a good deal to me.
Why is everything about money today, what about discovery and trying to solve the mysteries of the universe?
EDIT: Yes, but why put the emphasis on the value of the gold? To transport the gold back to earth would probably cost more money than the value of the gold.
If they used the gold on mars for stuff it would save alot of money so for it to be shipped to earth with there current tech,, No But to use and refine there certainly :)
No, and even if it were at current prices, and the cost of getting to and from Mars was negligible, that much additional gold would cause the market price to collapse.

at about $1,000 an ounce, 16 ounces per pound, that's $16 billion worth of gold.
That wouldn't even pay for a manned Mars mission to NOT get the gold. And you're not gonna get that much gold off of Mars with robots.

No. With current technology and infrastructure, it would cost more to bring the gold back than the gold itself would be worth.
It would be worth the money, but they won't find any gold on Mars!

Nothing is worth the money. Everything is worth the experience.
No. $23,000/per pound for a rocket to go to space.
