It's a balancing act of continuing you existence and enjoying it.
Some balance it differently than other, also not many look at things in your given perspective.
Example: Some save up for the future, investing in better times ahead
Others like to live in what they have, the present moment.
You're incorrect in assuming we all neglect our desires, some of us just have a different definitions of fulfillment.
And also death (life being short) is a concept many of us deny till the end. We may say we accept it , but coming face to face with death this facade is wiped away.
Because the world we live in is F***ed up beyond repair. We are born into a whole bunch of obligations that turn into a whole bunch of other obligations and continue for as long as you go until you stop and say, "you know what, I'm not going to conform in any way I see as conformity". We all conform by definition in order to learn things and experience, but there gets to a point where you can distinguish yourself as a unique individual, and step away from the norm, and do what you want to do. "We" do so many things we dont like because "we" dont know what we want. Saying "we" i mean those that do so, because you can stop what you are doing and start doing what you want as long as it is moral and justified. There are a lot more reasons as to why we like so many things we dont do, but I can briefly answer that by saying that people are just scared most of the time that once they dive in, they cant get back out. Its never too late to change as long as you are alive, with the obvious exception of terminal illness and other limiting factors.

We do this with the intention to live longer, I think...
we do what we dislike so that we can do what we do like.
...because its all we've ever known.
