But you would’ve THOUGHT I asked those questions, by the way all of you showed that question went WAY over your head, from your answers. lol.
Most of you focused on the qualities of a good coach. Or being a good coach has little to do w/ being a great player; (I never said that they were related). I just wanted to confirm if in fact he was an average player at best. Instead, you all bit on your self – imposed hook, and went off about great coaches.
Update 5:You all failed to answer the question in its simplest form. “WHY … wasn’t Garrett a good player?” Answer: cuz he sucked. Lack of physical ability to perform at that level. Simple.

He's such a good game planner b/c of his time on the sidelines as a player. When QB's come to the sideline who do they talk to the O- Coordinator and the back up. Who always has a clip board of the game plan on the sideline(players)? The backup QB. Look at Gary Kubiak, all those years in Denver as the back up to Elway. His game planning on offense and play calling is what kept them competitive all those years. If you can ask why Garrett wasn't any good as a player and is good at coaching, then I can ask why isn't Montana a coach? Or Elway, Marino, Emmitt Smith or Barry Sanders? They could play the game at an outstanding level, Do they understand or can they devise their own concepts and philosophies? If so can they teach it to another player. Do they see weakness in their own players and of other teams. Can they teach their players to exploit it? Just b/c a guy doesn't have the physical tools to be a top notch player doesn't mean that he understands the game any less. To answer your second question, yes Kerry Collins was that good. He is a guy that needs to be in the right type of system for his strength. A run first O that set ups the the pass of the play action. He would never work out in a west-coast system with that big arm. Another example is Jeff Garcia.The Browns tried him as the drop back passer, and look how well that worked out. That guy is a west coast guy and will not work in an Air Coryell Offense. He(Garcia) might be able to run a run and shoot if any one still deployed that scheme.
Just because you can't play well doesn't mean you can't coach well. Gary Kubiak is a good example of that. He backed up John Elway for most of his career. He was a great O/C now he is the Head Coach of Houston.
What you will find out is that if you don't have the natural talent then you have to make up for it in knowledge of the game. That is what a lot of marginal players do. Jason Garrett is one of them.
Garrett was a good QB, albeit, a back up. He pulled out many games as a Cowboy. I remember the one Thanksgiving Game against Green Bay...he started and got the job done.
The real factor is that he is smart. He is a student of the game and understands the complexities of offenses and how to match up against defenses. There are a lot of QBs out there with God-given talent, but they need instruction on how to read defenses and gameplay situations.
Listen, I hate the Cowpukes worse than anyone, but one does not have to be a great NFL player to be a good coach, look at Jimmy Johnson, won a couple SB rings never was an NFL starter. Chuck Noll 4 rings no experience. An NFL coach needs good assistants and he must be an excellent talent evaluator and also he can't fall in love with his players like Wade Phillip's dad did, Bum wouldn't cut guys who were past their prime and worse yet, he brought them with him when he moved to New Orleans..Earl Cambell, Leon Gray, Guido Merkens!!

Jason Garrett obviously knows the game, but he didn't the have the physical abilities of Troy Aikman.
It seems like the people who were good have become sports commentators, while those who were so-so go into coaching.
Rooney Rule does no longer prepare ro intervening time coaches. Garrett can proceed something of this season. till now they hire an enduring coach for next season, then they ought to interview applicants of shade, no longer till now. although the undesirable shaggy dog tale approximately this is.. they sometimes only interview as a formality. If Jerry needs his honest haired boy, it won't remember what number different, plenty extra qualified applicants of ANY race he interviews. Jerry needs somebody he can shove his and up the butt of, and administration like a sock puppet, no longer a coach. That way he continues to be coach and GM, yet they're the patsies who take the blame while Jerry's meddling self destructs. possibly they are actual usa's team... the Cowboys.. this government and fiscal equipment... all of them look to be run almost the comparable.................................

Having the talent and atheltic ability to perform on field, is different from understanding the game and coaching it from the sidelines.
There have been many great coaches that were not great stars...and vice versa.
For example, I dont think Troy Aikman would be a good coach.
There's this old saying that goes: "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach." Well, in this instance one would have to substitute the word coach for teach. He has a great grasp of the game, but he probably just wasn't talented enough himself to become very successful as a quarterback.
