I worked as a lifeguard last summer and I was planning on returning this summer but my family keeps telling me that I’m taking away jobs from high schoolers because I’m working there? Do you think that’s true? I should add you have to apply and pass an interview in order to be hired, I don’t see the big deal on how I’m the one affecting them. I’m 19. My certification ends in May 2020 that’s the only reason why I’m returning this year.

Does a high schooler really need a job more than an adult trying to make it on their own? I wish I wouldn't have had one (or at least only a summer job like lifeguard). I probably would've done so much better in high school. Having a job was a good way to connect with people and make great memories though. We had fun back then.
You're not that far-removed from high school yourself. Live it up while you still can. Being a lifeguard at a lake, summer camp, pool, ocean or waterpark is a good job to have when you're young and it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. Not everyone gets the chance to do it.
When you're an obese 40 year old and still applying for a summer job as a lifeguard then your family can tell you you're taking jobs away from high schoolers. Party's over. Time to get a real job....
No, the job is up for grabs by anyone who is qualified; and you clearly are. You have to know what to do as a lifeguard if something goes down.
Being hired for a job is not taking a job. Besides, YOU need a job. So, why skip it for someone else to eat? YOU will starve like that. Take the job.
Taking someone else's job would be something like cheating or lying to get the job. Or else, getting someone fired so that you will get the promotion / position. THAT'S taking other people's job.
Ignore them, you pass the test go for it. Nice way to meet girls.
Give it a try
High school kids and what jobs they apply for or not are not your concern.... you look after you, you put yourself first........
Let me tell you something.
If those high schoolers were in your position, do you think they would share the same thought as you? Probably not. They will try to get whatever job they can without thinking of others who need it. We live in a competitive market. If these high schoolers want the job then they need to step their up their game and show interest.
I don't know if I am going to get hired at Journey's. I really need a job. I left my last one due to scheduling conflict. Had a group interview and there were other candidates who were in high school. They were asking ridiculous questions if they are allowed to listen to music and if employees get benefits. They didn't sound serious about the job. My friend, who recommended me in the first place, told me I was the only likable candidate the manager interviewed so far so I my chance of getting hired skyrocketed. I am terrible with interviews. I really am. These kids would probably have a much better chance if they showed they were serious about their job.
The thing is some companies will still hire high schoolers. It's important that you don't feel bad about it. If those high schoolers wanted the job bad enough then they would have done everything to demonstrate their desire to work. Employers don't have time for games. They want someone who means business. Remember! It's a competition. Other competitors are not thinking about you even in the slightest. They are thinking of themselves. You should do the same.
of course u should apply for a job. how is mental capacity of your parents? who cares about other children when they have their own unemployed?
Be a man dude , do what you like to do. You should be looking into full time employment. You are an adult now. time to pay your own bills. Time to support yourself.
No, return to the job. They will hire high schoolers too, and they will want you to train them. Just like when you were in high school, and somebody trained you. That's how those jobs work. Without people coming back to train the new people, they'd be in trouble. Imagine if nobody came back, and there was only a bunch of high schoolers to watch that pool. Who would be training them? Who'd be saving anyone who might need help?
I'm guessing here, but I think your family would like you to take a job that makes more money. You're 19. They're not your responsibility. You do what's best for you.
