yes, that is possible but that would depend on the motherboard of your computer. because some motherboards do not support quad cores especially those 2 years ago like the 945 series chipset. and some might need a BIOS update. you can ask the tech support if you are unsure. i think you cannot just change stuffs inside a branded computer. or download cpu-z and check the motherboard you are using especially the chipset and google the specs and see if it will support quad core.
i took a quick look and i couldn't find anything to say that it isnt compatible. but that doesn't mean it will work.
best bet is t oget a friends pc that has a Quad core, and test his processor the only thing that will happen if it's not compatible is that is will not turn on.... IF you do it wrong because you dont know what your doing then you could break your pc.
if thats not an option, you could bring it to a computer store and tell them what your looking to do and they might test a quad core in it if they have one in a machine.... but i mean a proper dorky computer store NOT one like currys/dixons/pcworld none of them know what there doing.
theorethically it would be possible, but you've to change more than the processor alone. if i am not wrong, however, the acer aspire is a laptop family... so it'll be a lot harder: laptop are always a pain when you want to update/upgrade their hardware; briefly, we can say that it is not possible to upgrade laptop hardware, save for things like memories, harddisk and few more.
It should be easy, depends on the CHIPSET of your motherboard, if your not sure whatcha got, use a Q 6600/6700, they are ceap this days and will fit ANY socket 775 mobo, the 95 watts limit is BS.

Why be retarded?
A core 2 duo is sufficient for almost anything.
Save you money, this nation is in a depression.
Watch the news.
If you can run an E2400 in it you can run basically any core 2 quad using up to 95 watts power in that system Namely anything up to a Q9650
the X1700 is a micro desktop so it should be a relatively easy upgrade.
See the top category in the link for processors that model shipped with.

As long as the motherboard supports the processor you shouldn't have a problem.
To know this you would need the model number of your motherboard
Maybe with a new motherboard, look at newegg and Intel.
you can't add cores to your computer.
