I absolutely 100% agree. In the words of Bill Cooper, (not word for word exactly)
"They [christians] don't even know who they worship. They say to turn the other cheek, to not upset others, to do what you're told, but that wasn't Jesus! Do you think he made people happy when he went into those synagogues? When he grabbed the pharisees by the ear, shoved them out, and told the truth? No, Jesus was a dangerous man! And by god so am I. And so should you be!"
All Jesus prophesized was love and understanding. He loved everyone. He didn't even go up to people and say "oh you're gonna go to hell because you don't believe in what I believe." So where the hell is it your place? I believe there are so many Christians that are kind and full of love, but the ones that are extremely hypocritical and say Jesus is the way the truth and the life, believe in him or you're horse ****! To them I say you do not have a clue who your Jesus is.
Instead of getting defensive, just stop judging. If you want freedom or religion for yourself, let other people have it too, even if you disagree.
Everyone is a working progress. Love and compassion is a fruit that has to be grown. Once you are saved and except Christ as you Lord and savior, every habit and mind set don't automatically change. Our spirits are renewed in Christ once we are saved but our soul (mind, well, and emotions) has to be renewed and worked on daily. All christians are not perfect and should strive to me more like Christ. Christians should not judge others. I guess Christians have the truth of Jesus Christ and wants everyone to accept it and don't do it in the right way all the time. Being corrected is different form bring judged. We all need to be teachable in some way that we may be perfected. But sometimes people look out the window instead of the in the mirror. God is the only one that can judge.
I grew up with that hybrid monstrosity that is mainline Christianity. Most say God is love...but they either haven't read the OT or are already so brainwashed, they think having your child(ren) killed for the decision of some political leader they've never met or talked to is 'just' (Exodus-Pharaoh).
BTW, someone said that God doesn't condemn, judge...something. Isaiah 45:7 'I make peace and create evil. I, the Lord, do all these things.'
Besides, if this deity made everything, who made satan and choices in order for us to have 'free will'?
Jesus very much taught Eastern philosophy. Take his 'Judge not lest ye be judged' compared to YHWHs 'An eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth...'The two are obviously not the same. As you can see, many of these Christians don't get it and figure, 'Well, we all sin...But we are going to be forgiven so we're OK' They don't/can't understand REAL responsibility for their actions
I wonder if they even realize Gandhi's comments could also be interpreted as an observation.
But, like I said, it's 'OK' if they're judgmental. Why, they have an imaginary friend on their side!
Because we, as humans, are flawed. We cannot be just like Jesus because he was God in flesh, perfect.
Regardless of what you believe, Gandhi said this because many Christians these days have taken a different route than Jesus would have wanted us to.
Instead of, like you said, being compassionate or understanding, Christians attempt to force their beliefs on others through violence or condemnation. It's completely different from Jesus' view.
It's sad. And it's something I've wrestled with for a while now. But lately I've just realized to stop looking to pastors or church members for guidance and relying soley on the Lord.
and Yes...Christ is amazing..but people who claim to be Christian..don't act christian...
They are involved in politics...wars...swear, use profane lenguage, aren't so compasionate , Do not preach, do not act or follow the Christ.
Besides certain Creeds and beleifs....and forms of worship..that are not proper....A true Christian not only beleives but acts as a beleiver....Even the demons beleive and shudder but a faith without works is dead (james 2:18,19)
they listen to music watch films....and do things.Jesus would never do.
So the real question is NOT "what would Jesus do"? but.."would Jesus even be with me"?
Ghandi...simply said..a true statement...
Jesus is amazing...but not those who claim to be followers of him.
Only those true followers guide themselves by the Bible's standards and P.O.V.'s and not only that...but share that Message of The Kingdom with others from all nations (mat 24.14.... 28:19,20)
People sin, are imperfect and they have many flaws, but that's just part of being human.
A lot of people who consider themselves Christians sin and practice judgement. When Ghandi said this, I think he himself was also being judgemental by thinking that all Christians are the same. But like I said, he's only human.
Christians attempt to be like Christ, but of course, they all fall short of his image. No one can be just like Christ. He's perfect.
I can understand why Ghandi would say that Christians aren't like Christ, but God didn't intend for everyone to be just like Christ. God only wants us to follow Christ as an example.
I think I can see why Gandhi said that. There are many of us Christians that don't uphold the ideals of Christianity. Of course, no one is perfect. Christians (like me) make mistakes just like everyone else does. It is just natural. Christ showed compassion wherever he went. That is something mankind struggles with showing. There is a balance of good and bad in the world. Good can be harmed, disrupted, even corrupted. It never goes away, though. There are always going to be good and bad people in the world.
In this messed up world, you can be sure that there is good somewhere along with bad.
You are right that we have gone too far with religion. We have built our own rules and traditions and when someone breaks one of these rules we immediately judge them harshly. If we focused more on just simply getting to know God in a personal relationship, we would be more like Jesus...
By the way, Jesus judged people as well.. Just read the New Testament.
It is just your perspective. It is tough to offer the good news (on behalf of our savior) and call a person to repentance and Baptism without being accused of judging. Accusations come no matter whether a Christian does or does not have any idea what the sins of some potential convert might be. In this forum though a person denying our savior often reveals their nature for the purpose of attempting to glamorize their condition. I liken the accusations to putting bumper stickers over car fender dents wanting to feel better about your ride instead of accepting a free and guaranteed for life fender repair.
I don't understand why Christians are that way, either. I am a Christian, and as such I think it's my job to do two things. To believe in God and to be the best person I can be. I try not to be hypocritical, I try to give to those who need it, and I try not to judge others. Jesus made friends with those even his disciples considered beneath him, because he preached equality and tolerance. I think Jesus is a pretty awesome guy to strive to be like, and I wish more people would, even if they don't happen to have the same beliefs I do.
