I will assume the drive you have windows installed on is C.

First change to the winnt\system32\config directory like so:

cd c:\winnt\system32\config

From there, you can open up the sam.log into a text editor with this command:

edit sam.log

Alternatively, you could just type

edit c:\winnt\system32\config\sam.log without need for changing directory.

To execute a program in dos, just type it's name as a command.

You can not run WINXP programs in DOS. I am assuming you mean to say you have DOS v5.0 or you are talking about a recovery diskette. Either way, if the program is uses GUI you can not run it under DOS.

There are about 30 different applications that have a sam.exe. Most need the Windows GUI.
