I am trying to take tucks in the waistband of my daughters pants. There is elastic in them and my sewing machine just wont’ sew through it.?
The elastic can not be removed first. I alter her pants regularly, but this time the sewing machine doesn’t hook the top thread with the bobbin thread. Thooughts?
If the material is too thick, it's just not going to fit under the needle or feed correctly.
But you say the thread isn't catching right, and that's a different problem.
If it doesn't sew correctly on a plain seam ( not too thick) then you need to reguide/rethread the upper thread while the needle is in the UP position. Always guide the upper thread while the needle is in the UP position so that the thread can pass through the open tension disks. If the needle is in the DOWN position the tension disks are closed, and the thread can't pass between them. This causes all kinds of stitch problems with the needle and bobbin.
If that's not the problem, you could always sew the top section of your seam (through the elastic part) by hand. You might have to take several passes up and down the hand-sewn section to make it strong, but it would work just as well as machine sewing, after all.
