My only recourse is to go to Thunderbird, open up a new message and then use the insert symbol to get the º symbol to then cut and paste into an answer or question here.
Recently i also came across the ² (square) term and frankly i have no idea how to do this one from scratch.
So my question, is there a simple way from the keyboard (Ctl-something?) to just put these or any other character into a text stream anywhere?

on a pc...
hold ALT
type 0 1 7 6 on your number pad
release alt
360° :)
if you're using a pc, goto accessories>system tools>character map. Find that symbol in the character list and it will have a corresponding number. With your insertion point in the field hold alt and press the corresponding numbers, on the number pad only and release.
° its ALT 248 if on XP and ps that is you hold down ALT and then punch in the numbers
