No litter box that's cleaned should smell that bad. Are your cats unneutered males? If so there is your problem - their urine reeks due to their hormones, and nothing short of neutering them will help. And if it smells of ammonia, that can be a sign of a health issue. A trip to the vet is in order for one or both if it's a strong ammonia smell.
If you're not using it, you might want to try the clumping type of litter. It smells less if you keep the box clean, because the cat urine forms balls that you remove when you scoop the box.
That's the only kind of litter I use, and I have five cats with four litter boxes.
Never have the litter box in your room. Move to bathroom or a storage room. Also the cats could have a UTI because that causes strong urine odor. A visit to the vet or at least a call will help too. I have four cats and use Maxx for small spaces and multiple cats. Works great
A product that is excellent at eliminating urine odor is "Severe Urine Neutralizer SUN" from Amazon or from removeurine.com. Mix it up and spray or pour it on the urine residue and it will kill the smell. If it is the litter box itself that smells clean it with SUN solution. If it is the walls and floor around the box then treat those areas with the SUN solution. If the urine has soaked into the floor (wood, carpet, tile etc.) the SUN solution needs to soak into those areas also to remove the smell.
Scour it with soap and water occasionally. Try another litter. Use clumping so you can scoop it out at least twice a day. We have 2 cats and the box never smells.
first off, you should put the litter box in the bathroom. Second of all you should clean it out every day. Last but not least, if you have male cats, you should consider having them fixed because their smell is mopre pungent and difficult to mask. Also, I have always used FRESHSTEP brand litter and I fou nd it to be the best
get fresh step extreme odor contral CLUMPING sand...it cost more than non-clumping, but it lasts longer and you can scoop out the clumps of urine and have a completely clean smelling box everyday.
