It’s absolutely essential that diabetics test their blood sugar from time to time. From what I understand, a small sample of blood (often from a pin-prick) is necessary to test glucose levels.
So are Jehovah’s Witnesses diabetics allowed to test their blood sugar? If not, how do they manage their disease?
Finally, is it possible for JWs to request indivual waivers of their policy if necessary to avoid dying?
Update:JWs teach that "blood must be poured out on the ground." And that is why the Watchtower does not permit a person to donate his blood, put it into storage, and use it later on for a transfusion (autologous transfusion).

It's real funny when non-Witnesses think they can explain to Jehovah's Witnesses what it means to be a Witness. It's ludicrous.
Our stand is based on God's World, the Holy Bible, both "Old" and "New" Testaments. Christians are specifically advised to "abstain from blood" at Acts 15:28, 29. What is given there is not an "OT blood rule," but the counsel of the Holy Spirit and the apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ.
What diabetics do in testing their glucose levels might be compared with the case of a person who inadvertently bit the iniside of the mouth and swallowed a bit of blood. Abstaining from blood is not reduced to the level of absurdity, and it is only strange people, not Jehovah's Witnesses, who would think otherwise.
Since everybody dies in this system of things, I don't know what sort of "individual waivers" can protect a person from death.
But you are making the totally unwarranted assumption that a blood transfusion is always lifesaving, or that there are no safe, lifesaving alternatives to blood. Both are false. Blood transfusions are no guarantee, and many safe alternatives to blood exist, alternatives which also save lives.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.
Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!
I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.
I do diabetic tests, go to the lab have blood taken for tests I do not eat blood products, and when a dr tells me Im gonna die without a blood transfusion, I just have to laugh. I been there 3 times they said that, Gee, I guess they were wrong! Jehovah's instructions are never waived, if someone wants to receive a blood transfusion, thats their business, but disfellowshipping could occur if the elders found out.. and they did not feel sorry about it. I highly doubt that the brothers would find out if a Jw did so, because medical records are not veiwable by the public.really then, a person's personal relationship with God is what is damaged when someone ignores God's commands. but certainly forgivable by God.
What the bloody deuce?
OK, from what I understand, JW's aren't supposed to consume blood nor have blood transfusion. That has NOTHING to do with testing blood glucose levels.
I'm a Type 2 diabetic who takes 20 - 25 units of insulin daily.
To restate things slightly for the purpose of clarification, Jehovah's Witnesses teach that God's law prohibits the misuse of blood. In some instances, this requires the pouring out of blood onto the ground, in effect, returning the life to Jehovah who gave it. In every instance where blood is involved, however, this is not necessary.
I love the way bar_enos put it: "Abstaining from blood is not reduced to the level of absurdity." But that is what oftentimes happens when questions such as these arise.
I am a diabetic. I test my blood glucose thrice daily. In doing so, I do not violate God's law on blood. I am also a woman. Not to overstate the obvious, but women have menstrual cycles. When they take care of it, they do not violate God's law on blood. God's word the Bible prohibits the immoral and unsanctioned use of blood. Let me repeat that: God's word prohibits the immoral and unsanctioned use of blood. Menstruation cycles, blood tests, inadvertent nose bleeds and dental procedures (which produce blood) do not violate God's law on the use of blood.
I truly hope this helps you out.

I am a diabetic and also a nurse. I have no problem testing my sugar as needed. The command we are under is at Acts 15:29
to keep abstaining from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication. If YOU carefully keep yourselves from these things, YOU will prosper. Good health to YOU!”
This in no way has anything to do with having blood work of any kind done.
We do what is pleasing to Jehovah, not man. I have refused transfusions in the past and lived. I let it be known in the beginning of my relationship with my DR. my stand on blood. I have not met any opposition yet.
