No-one needs to follow an ancient book full of rules and values, many of which are no longer rational or practical in today's world.
Atheists have just as many morals and ethics as religious people.
We are just as capable of being good, kind, honest, generous, charitable, hard-working and loving as anyone. But when we behave like that, we do it because we're good people - not because we think it will earn us a place in paradise.
Because that citizen, unlike many religions had done will never need to hide and protect sexual abusers in their groups and try to attack and blame the victims... to keep their good moral and ethical life fantasy... moral hypocrisy is old and Jesus say something about that, the conservative religious moral people of his time accused him of blasphemy...you know how that end...or not
Your question is an affront to all decent, law abiding atheists out there.
"Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners (the scum of the earth)?" This question was asked by the uber religious Pharisees.
Jesus, overhearing them, answered "It is not the healthy that need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners."
I am very aware of my own spiritual sickness and need of Him.
Religious people who think they are morally superior in their own righteousness (like you) won't go to Him.
The Pharisees, the scribes, the high priest conspired with the herodians to have Jesus tortured to death.... all the while REALLY believing they were doing God's work.
So if you think you're moral enough to not be condemned to hell, I bid you 'good luck'.
I'll stick with Jesus, because I am honest with myself about myself: I am broken and in desperate need of Him.
PS. He is a doctor that makes house calls. Call out His name when you're alone and it's quiet.
Humans have a sense of morality. Notice I didn't say theists or atheists; Christians, Muslims, Jews, tall people, brown-eyed people, males, females, etc.. I said humans.
As a general rule, the countries will little reliance on religion have low crime rates. The countries where nearly everyone is religious have high crime rates.
Clearly religion is a complete failure at teaching people to live moral and ethical lives.
Secular law is far better law than religion can provide.
Non of the big religions could be called moral or ethical, they run a fraud for profit, and aren't even honest enough to admit that. Yet it is a fact. It is money they are after, yours, and as much as they can get of it. You count to your church just like all the other dollar signs.
