What is the literal difference between writing 道教 or 家 in Chinese?
Is one way more correct or proper? Why are there two ways to write the word?
Update:I think what I was looking for is simply 道 on its own. Tao, the way.

I'm not sure you got the characters you wanted -- the first translates to English as "Taoism" and the second means house/family/specialist. Frankly the second one can mean a lot things.
If you meant to type 大家 (da jia) instead of 道教 (dao jiao), then the difference is clear -- 大家 means "everyone".
