I'm from London and am thinking of living there from early January to mid June to do a marine conservation internship. Can anyone tell me what to expect from this part of Mexico in terms of the culture, weather, etc? I think April-ish it'll start heading toward the rainy season, how cold/wet is that?!
Update:If I've survived Glastonbury, I'm sure I can stomach it ;)!

You picked the best part of the year. Of course there is occasional rain, but just little showers that typically last only a few minutes and move on. Rainy season is July-November. In January, you will have cool nights so plan on a light jacket for evenings. It will be very warm and humid in June. Mostly warm and sunny the whole time. You shouldn't have to worry about mosquitos during the dry season but sometimes when the wind blows from the north you will get some, especially in Mahahual. Be sure to use insect repellent to avoid dengue fever.
The people of this region are lovely. Many are of Mayan descent and have strong family values. The southern part of the Yucatan, as you describe, is laid back; not the hussle bussle of Cancun.
What a great opportunity. I hope that you enjoy the area as much as I do.
spectacular!!! you're in for a great time!!! anticipate sunny heat climate with a intense interior the low 80s in January and February. do not concern the rains the two...i've got been in countless aspects of the Yucatan in could and June and the rain is often not something greater desirable than a heat tropical bathe for a short term, then the skies clean and it will become yet yet another gloriously sunny Mexican day. Have a great time (and don't overlook to bypass to the ruins at Coba!)
I've been to Tulum. The waters are amazing, but the bathroom facilities in this part of the world leave something to be desired. If you like camping, you probably wouldn't mind it. Great weather compared to London.
You have a good selection of ground transportation...Slow or Fast See links
