Has anyone been to southeastern Mexico? Yucatán, Tulum, Mahahual etc?

I'm from London and I'm thinking of living in this area from early January to mid June to do a marine conservation internship. Can anyone tell me what to expect from this part of Mexico in terms of the culture, weather, etc? I think April-ish it'll start heading toward the rainy season, how cold/wet is that?!

The rainy season is more like June through November, but you could get occasional thundershowers in the late afternoon in April if the heat of the day is hot enough to form storm clouds. Throughout the rainy season, the rains rarely last more than an hour, and they're only cold/wet if you're out in it getting soaked. Then after wards, it's hot and humid, as the sun goes to evaporating the puddles the rain has left.

The culture along this side of the Yucatan is geared to the tourist, but the tourist culture gets less and less the farther you get away from Cancun. Tulum is a nice little town, but the Maya ruins of Tulum and the Xel-ha Eco Park soon get inundated with busloads of tourist from Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Mahahual is less touristy than Tulum, but when a cruise ship stops there, it disgorges it's passengers to drink in the bars and eat in the restaurants and shop for souvenirs. But in the afternoon, all the drinkers and eaters and shoppers are back on the ship to sail to another destination,

Chetumal is farther south and is not very touristy. It's a harbor town where freighters bring imports from around the world into Mexico. Few tourists from Cancun come this far south, but Chetumal sees a lot more people from Belize who cross the border to buy electronics.

You will probably have a lot more trouble adjusting to the heat as the calendar moves toward summer than you will adjusting to the rain--when you see the storm clouds forming, just head to a bar for a beer to wait out the rain.

Outstanding!!! You're in for a GREAT time!!!

Expect sunny warm weather with a high in the low 80s in January and February. Don't fear the rains either...I've been in various parts of the Yucatan in May and June and the rain is often nothing more than a warm tropical shower for a short time period, then the skies clear and it becomes yet another gloriously sunny Mexican day.

It would be sunny and fair weather, the rainy season starts at June and so on, you will enjoy your stay there. Try to go on all the best places Mexico has to offer :)
