when i press down on the brakes everything works as it should, but if i release any pressure at all he light turns off. for example, i can have the car completely stopped and barely lift my foot where the car is still stopped, but the light i can see in my rearview turns off.

Brake light switch needs to be replaced.
Try a new switch at the brake petal. Shorts can be difficult to locate as they are broken wire inside a plastic costing and travel places you can’t get to easy.
There is a switch behind the brake pedal that tells the brake lights to turn on - it may need to be adjusted.
I had the same problem with a clutch interlock switch - on cold days it would act like it didn't want to start, but simply pressing harder on the clutch would make it come on. I just put a little electrical tape around the pedal, and it worked fine.
Adjust the brake light switch - usually behind the brake pedal - so that you actuate it a lot sooner. Yours seems to be activating only at the extreme end of your brake pedal travel, therefore it turns off (or doesn't even come on) with only light pressure on the pedal.
The vehicle may not move when you let up slightly on the brake pedal but you've let up far enough for the brake light switch to shut off. That's normal. If the switch was set any differently then that it would stay on when you let off the pedal completely or the brake lights would blink on and off with the slightest bump on the brake pedal.
Check your oil level and don't let it get any lower than half way between the upper and lower dipstick marks.that's more of a concern.
Yes, it s only the switch which needs adjustment. Usually to be found in the footwell adjacent to the brake pedal. It's a simple switch which just requires turning in or out to adjust.
That is NOT a short, it is a switch that needs to be adjusted so it comes on sooner and offer later. Make model and year would certainly get you closer to a REAL solution.
