The early 1970s witnessed turbulence due to the Vietnam war. Controversy raged between proponents and opponents of the war. There were protests which sometimes turned deadly, as at Kent state in 1970. Socially there was considerable tension between many members of the younger generation, who formed a counterculture, and the older, more traditional element of society. Soon, there was a serious political problem--the watergate scandel, which led to Nixon's resignation in 1974. Economically, the energy crisis began in 1973-74, when the arab oil embargo led to gas shortages. This problem recurred in 1979, due to fallout from the Iranian revolution. The end of the 1970s witnessed another economic issue--high inflation.
