What else stops you from not doing something? it's harm for the self, isn't it? Now do you accept to get benefit on the account of harming others? The Law of Karma won't let you free.. it sees your intentions behinds your actions.
Definitely these are words to live by.. it shows you are contributing to universal goodness.. I'd say: Ask others to do something which brings them and all the rest benefit.
It should be such that you ask others to do something that benefits them rather than hurt them if you are a benevolent person. And how do you know it benefits them, because definitely you've done it before and experienced the benefits first yourself and you like to pass the same beneficial experience to others.
Otherwise if you ask others to do what you won't do, well it shows that you're afraid on incurring a loss on yourself by doing the action but not considerate about others.. it shows selfishness or ego..
Whatever actions you perform will shape your nature.. if you follow the above statement, then definitely you'll remain very caring and considerate about others.. If ego or selfishness creeps in and makes you do an action that defies the above statement, it can lead to other similiar actions which will then turn into habit > character... a negative one.
I certainly get the implication that we should not ask someone to do something that we would not do ourselves. After all, if we would not do it, how can we expect someone else to. They are probably good words to live by. On the flip side, Sometimes there is something that I know I would not do but also know that someone else would and that may lead me to ask.
Amazingly solid. And valid. We need to be authentic and live the way we encourage others to. Otherwise, there is hypocrisy involved. Believers call it talking the talk but not walking the walk.
