I would also like to add that before modern medicine a lot of children died young do to health issues ( like heart problems and cancer). With today's medicine we and correct or prolong lives.
Caitlin's right. I'd also like to add that up until the 1970's or so many families with Down's Syndrome children put them away in institutions. It was considered shameful to have a retarded child and the world didn't want to know about them. We see them a lot more today because we now accept them as part of our society and families.
well it was always there but it wasn't as common as it is now cause people are waiting till they are much older to have children which adds to the risk of a kid being born with downs syndrome
