Bryan was seeking the support of labor unions and laborers in his candidacy. Since most laborers were debtors, (house, land, automobiles) they favored easier money (silver) and opposed that which banks demanded (gold.) Therefore Bryan talked of America being crucified on a "Cross of Gold" by the evil eastern bankers while the western Populists were the victims of unscrupulous lenders in the East.
And there you have it.
Great speech! One of the BEST
