Hi, so my girlfriend has been on birth control pills for well over a few years. She is very responsible when taking them. She rarely ever misses a day. After having sex without a condom, she informed me that she took just 1 pill of St. John's Wort the day prior. I understand that the key ingredient in this pill is Hyperforin, which makes the body metabolize drugs at a faster rate. Although she uses birth control, I always withdrawal (pull out). How fast does Hyperforin affect the body? If she only took one 1 dose, should I be worried? Respectfully, we are not wanting a pregnancy at the moment. I understand that maybe none of you are certified medical professionals, but if anyone has any experience/advice, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

We don't know how important the interaction between St John's wort and the contraceptive pill is, but there are case reports of unplanned pregnancies in women taking the contraceptive pill and St John's wort. I don't think there are any trials, so we have a strong suspicion of an effect, but we don't know if it is a real thing, or if it is, how significant.
Reputable manufacturers of St John's wort should put a warning inside the packs.
I think the chances of becoming pregnant after 1 tablet must be very small.
