I'm an American, but I had the opportunity to reside in Québec for three years, and am positively fascinated by Canadian and Québécois politics. There will be a provincial election on March 26 which could end up being one of the most important in Canadian history.
The polls show it almost a dead heat between the Liberals and the Parti Québécois. The Liberals are federalists, who wish to remain within Canada, and the PQ are sovereignists, who wish to secede from confederation. André Boisclair, the leader of the PQ, has stated that if he becomes Premier, he will call for a referendum on sovereignty as soon as possible.
What are your opinions?
Update:philip: Having learned French in Chicoutimi, Qc, Parisians sound to my ears as if they are speaking with their mouths fiull of God-knows-what. A very rough analogy would be how one of those very pro-pah Brits sound to American ears :-)

Boisclair is already rallying for international support for an independent Quebec. He is extremely confident that he will win the provincial election....and the following referendum.
I won't be surprised if he wins the former, but very surprised if he wins the latter. This will be the third referendum, and perhaps, the separatists are happy enough with their distinct nation status.
Either way, if it could put an end to all the crap, so be it. Having grown up and lived in Canada all my life until last year, I can tell you that 'fascinating' is hardly what we would call our politics. And we are terribly sick of the Quebec whining. If you want out...then GO! Hopefully, France will pick up the ticket...and Canada will have one less province to support with Federal tax money!
My opinion is that a Canadian sounds funny speaking French.
They sound like a Texan mangling the language. Totally hilarious.
The French will loose as always.
