Citizen Kane is one of those movies where it's great reputation tends to overshadow the film itself. If you've heard how great a movie is, you may tend to be underwhelmed when you see the actual movie - especially considering you may be use to great movies from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and Citizen Kane was made in 1941.

Orson Welles was success on the stage and radio when he came to Hollywood, but a totally inexperienced filmmaker. What he did was educate himself on all aspects of film technique and ways of telling stories through editing and camera angles that had been used in film up to that point. In creating Citizen Kane, he set out to use all of those techniques together together to make something of an epic story about the rise of a powerful man in America, and his abuses. Kane is often cited for it's use of deep focus photography. It wasn't the first to do this, but it was the first to do it notably in a way that really added to the style of the picture overall, and that was Bazin's point.
