Verse 19 says: O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.
Seems like the disciples were not prayed up enough in their faith to be able to do it. Jesus had a better relationship stronger with his father than the deciples did. They just were not strong enough to do the job or prepared for what they were tring to do.
Jesus wasn't strong enough to engage their hearts and minds into it. We first shall have total confindment in him first. What these people did instead had a drinking binge got a hotel and payed for some hookers. Which is if you have a hard time getting any, works for the less fortunate. While the others already have wifes who control their life anyway. See its all comes down to seeing the lord in new and exciting ways. Just because they wanted to take another path away from the law of moses doesn't mean their going to rot in hell. Because all people experience new avenue's to go down, that why and how the world keeps changing and growing. If nobody sinned then we would never have the oppurtunity to change for the better.
Because the diciples didn't understand that the people they were trying to help were very skeptical, and they did not believe it could happen. Jesus stepped in, and says "O unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me"
The answer is in the same chapter, if you continue reading.

I hope you wern't using this as some clever form of Bible teaching, because that kind of approach is dishonest, perhaps barely suitable for a class of children, certainly not for interacting with adults. Happy New Year!
29 He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer.[b]"
Why were Some of Jesus Jesus’ disciples unable to expel a certain demon after he had empowered them to do so?
(Mark 9:14-18)
Answer: Jesus' disciples obvesously failed to follow Jesus'instructions about Prayer and Fasting as confirmened in Mark 9:29. They, like all men got the big head, and thought that they could perform the miracles by their own power and in their own way, dening the Power of the Holy God who gave them the Holy Ghost to empower them to cast out devils and demons and heal the sick and raise the dead.
Mark 9:17-31 (King James Version)
17And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;
18And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
19He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.
20And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.
21And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.
22And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.
23Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
24And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
25When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.
26And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.
27But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.
28And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
29And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
30And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.
31For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

Jesus wasn't strong enough to engage their hearts and minds into it. We first shall have total confindment in him first. Some "modern" Bibles are removing some important words:
Look down in verse 28b-29 and my KJV says,
Why could not we cast him out? 29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer AND FASTING.
Fasting is a powerful tool that many neglect. Some even argue that it's "works based". If you do it with the wrong attitude, it would be.
Isaiah 58 tells of the ACCEPTABLE FAST.
Jesus didn't say 'IF' you fast...
He said:
Matthew 6:16 -- ... WHEN YE FAST ...
Because the diciples didn't understand that the people they were trying to help were very skeptical, and they did not believe it could happen. Jesus stepped in, and says "O unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me"
Jesus is SO THE MAN!
Because that demon could only be expelled by prayer and fasting. They weren't totally committed.
Bear in mind that the words used to describe ailments and treatments that we now take for granted, did not exist at the time.
A long-standing treatment for seizure disorders, that has proven to be efficacious, is the ketogenic diet, which invovles fasting by the patient.

29 He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer.[b]"
[b] some sources say prayer and fasting
In the following verse, Jesus tells them why:
28After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
29He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer"
They hadn't spent adequate time in prayer for this particular exorcism.
The book says that Fasting and prayer was needed.

This kind can only be expelled through prayer and fasting.
