Why is there a narrow trough on top of the swell near the island of Hawaii—the southernmost island?

Looking at the following picture of the Hawaiian island chain topography, you can see that above the "Big Island", there is a deep patch of water, whereas the rest of the islands are shallower due to the deposits of former volcanoes.

Why is there this trough?
