He was called the great mainly because of his many conquests. The territory he inherited from his father was little more than modern day Greece., but he went on to conquer almost all of western Asia from Egypt to India, no small feat.
While military conquests are not great the title is not justified.
What was more important about Alexander than his military conquests was his philosophy. He was a student of Aristotle. Greek philosophy became the basis of western civilization and Alexander made a major contribution to this. He spread Greek culture across western Asia and espoused it with Persian culture.
The Hellenized states that were founded after his death made it easier for the expansion of the Roman Empire later. This is a reason why Alexander made be greater than other conquerors.
Ceasar Gave him the title "Great" when he visited Egypt to so Alexander's tomb. Before that he was known as Alexander the invisible. Why he was called great is a matter of opinion. He was great in the eyes of people that lived during and after his time because of their beleifs. People Today may see him in negitive ways. For instance: For people from that time in history someone who could conqor others, get wealth and Prove himself is particular ways was glorified. That is why Alexander is now Called Alexander the great. Today some people might say he was a tyrant and a butcher because of the way he did it and so that doesn't make him great. In the way we veiw things today. Howevery Nobody else has ever been able to do what Alexandr did since his death Jun 10th 332 BC at age 33. You should learn more about Alexander yourself and then decide what you think made him great.
He was called "Great" because he was a celebrated king and conqueror. I can't answer the rest for you, because the rest is opinionated.
If it helps sway your opinion, Egyptians looked at him as a liberator and savior, and several other nations seen him as the same, and a god or son of a god on top of that(he was the Christ to a lot of ancient people)
Edit:
S K you bring up a good point I don't want to ignore, but you have to understand, what Alexander did and Ghengis Khan did were different. Alexander toppled a mightier empire than Ghengis Khan did, but on the contrary Ghengis Khan did control with a smaller force than Alexander, I will give him that. Alexander though was painted as "great" by more than just Greeks, he was called that joyfully by even the people he conqeured and gained respect of, i.e. the Persians, Indians, and Egyptians.
All I'm really saying is, it wasn't his feats on the battlefield that, in my opinion, made him truely great, but the way he went about doing it and the way he treated his empire after he conquered it all. He respected every culture and didn't try to enforce his own on it. If he hadn't died so soon, it would have been the Greek, not the Roman, empire that we would be basing our history books around as the empire that built roads and schools throughout the known world. If his time wasn't so short, he would have conquered more, especially considering he was building his army to sack Carthage before he died, which would have made his empire more vast than Ghengis Khans, but he died before he could have.
Good question. The Greeks tended to paint history with a prejudicial broad brush. Alexander was not as great as say Genghis Khan who conquered more of the world and created an empire three times as big as Alexander. So why was Alexander so great? He defeated the Persian Empire, which to the Greeks was a great source of envy and animosity.
A lot of Historians no longer use the word "Great" to describe Alexander. He wasn't that great, even if the haughty Greeks thought he was. Ironically, when Alexander conquered the Persian Empire, he was so taken in by their culture, their clothes, their traditions, that he started to wear their outfits, practice their rituals and ordered that the chefs prepare food using their techniques and spices. This angered some of the Greeks, since Alexander started to act more Persian than Greek.
The man conquered the entire world known to him at the time by the same age that I earned my bachelors degree. He had over a dozen cities named after him (Alexandria). In short, Alexander>>me and you, so I think the title "great" is justified.
its propaganda, duh, if alexander has the right to be called great, then stalin would be verified as one, alexander is like Attila then hun, he murder, plunder and rape, he destroy many cities that won`t agree with him. He crucified thousands of enemy soldiers, the only thing that is good is he accidentally contribute to the foundation of the western world. Which is why western world would reproduce to call him great. Just leave the past and deal with the future, smh modern propaganda. This is one of my source https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL38jxmncgU
