I don't mean donations of clothes or the outdated foodstuffs that some churches give. But why if a particular religious group claims to be 'godly' do they not provide for themselves as a congregation all that is needed to make their own particular religious group self sustaining therefore creating their own Nirvana here on Earth? God helps those who help themselves?
Update:Shouldn't the aim for any group to make sure ALL OF THEIR FLOCK be provided for?

Teach people to fish and they provide their own necessity and that's one problem in the US, too
much Gov assistance and titlements to the wrong people-why work when the Gov will take care of
you.
Well that would be Socialism and most religious people are Conservatives who view socialism as the devil's work.
Besides...how would they afford those multi-million dollar churches and nice cars and clothes and house for the Pastor?
Why do you think Government Social Programs have been expanded over the last 60 years?
It is because Christians no longer care for the poor, or the hungry or the sick or the homeless...well they do care about converting them but that is about it.
Christianity is a Failure as a Social Safety Net...so Government/Socialism has to pick up the slack.
every commune, religious or not, that man has created has died out. the socialist dream is a fool's lie, and more than any, Christian people should know this. Christianity is based on the recognition that man is corrupt by nature, and nature and experience teach that all men are not equal. these social experiments always find that just as in society, there are those who work and contribute a lot, those who do a little, those who do near nothing. naturally, there is resentment that builds against the slackers, and in time, the whole thing collapses.
The LDS (mormon) church has a very extensive welfare program that includes food assistance (they have their own farms), financial assistance (like helping to pay rent, bills, etc) and educational and job placement assistance. Plus, if you need a doctor or dentist or another service, many times people can connect you to other members in that field who are usually more than willing to help out.
What the church wont let you do is be on a constant handout program. They have things like job placements assistance and ask for your help in service oriented positions so that a person isnt constantly reliant on the church. It is very much into having people learn to be self reliant and take personal responsibility.
BYU is subsidized by the church which is why members pay such a low tuition for the kind of school it is. There are also educational funds to assist people in the church.
It is up to the local Bishops of the congregations to determine welfare needs of the members of their congregation.
Every member of the congregation is assigned 2 men and 2 women to check up and meet with them on a monthly basis to make sure they are ok both temporally and spiritually. You are assigned to go to a specific meeting time and location based on where you live. The reason Mormons meet in specific congregations (wards) based on their geographical location is so that every member's needs can be assessed and taken care of and people dont slip thru the cracks.
It actually works very very well on a private and not governmental capacity if done correctly and if everyone is doing their part. The US gvt has asked the LDS church help several times in disaster situations because of the ability to mobilize so fast and easily and because we have resources in place to respond very quickly to situations because of the intense organization and welfare programs in place. As a Mormon you basically have a world wide VERY organized resource at the tip of your fingertips for various needs. I could call the Bishop of any congregation anywhere in the world if I needed something from that area and it wouldnt be odd or weird.
I love the resources of the church and it really does provide the ability for the church to individually look after each member.
Congregations do tend to help each other out in times of need, but when it comes to daily life, the Bible says "if you don't work, you don't eat." The churches are not to make people dependent on them. Also, many churches do provide education in the form of Christian schools, which is open to those who want their children to attend. However, having public schools which are not affiliated with a church is part of what America stands for - religious freedom.
How are you going to do that when the churches are as big a business as wall street? Everyone has there hands in the collection plate, the preacher, the conferences and all of their people, the pastor's wife, and their children that were given positions to get into the collection plate. Provide what with what?
Because it shows you just where their true intentions are.
That would cost money. That means less money for the group leaders.
And the sicker and dumber the congregation is the more profitable they are, because the more desperate(sick) or gullible(dumb) they are.
That proves it: organized religion is about profit above all.
Greed, of course. They should provide for their congregation because their congregation provides for them!
It is much more profitable to the leadership to take in tithes and offerings and return them with promises that everything will get better after you die.
Excellent Question!
I think it is based on fear of the power of human selfishness.
