Walmart was founded by Sam Walton. He didn't want to name it Walton Mart because that wasn't as catchy so he named it Wal-Mart instead. The star is just to link the abreviation of his last name with the word mart... its just the logo that he decided to use. Maybe its stupid, but you'll never forget that the star is used for walmart... just like the bulls eye that is associated with target. You can see a bulls eye anywhere now... even while playing darts and it might trigger a response that makes you more likely to go to Target later to do some shopping. This is all just little advertising and marketing strategies.
The star is put there because of the Chinese. It came from their flag. Literally everything in Wal Mart is made there. Many former U.S. jobs have gone there. And China is the United States LARGEST creditor. We owe them more billions than any other of the countries we have borrowed money from. (G.D. Central Bank)
The economy they enjoy is what the U.S. used to enjoy. So go to Wal Mart, save a few pennies, and see if you can put another American Mom & Pop out of business. While you're at it, learn to speak Chinese, then you will be able to talk to your new boss!
Trademark and advertising. Everytime you see that star in the middle of a word you'll think (subconciously) about Walmart. Or at least that's how they explained it to me in my Marketing 101 class.

Subconciously, every time you see a star like it, you will think of walmart
Because if you move it over to the right it spells Walm-art. It is there to teach you how to say the name.
I guess as an advertisement or a design fot it.
Why are you letting something like that bother you so much?
To give it that American look.
