Im doing a big rd trip and a chick said that I will need a new car because of all the K’s its going to do! Its only 5000k’s or so…and Isn’t that what a car is meant for?
Update:John....lol my car is a well maintained 3yrs old Mazda 3, if belts and hoses start falling apart then my car gets a warranty repair as that defiantly shouldn't occur in today's new cars! also atm my car is sitting on 120,000k's and still runs like a princess

When I was a kid cars were only expected to be good for 100K miles (about 200K km). Because of that the mileage was important in buying a used car. That changed radically with improvements in engine technology in the 1980s but the public wasn't really aware of that, so there is still a lot of FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) surrounding odometer readings. If the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual is followed most cars today will last between 200K and 300K miles.
When I buy a used car I look for one with about 100K miles on it, although I will go as low as 80K miles and as high as 180K miles. At 50K miles it is hard to tell how a car has been treated; at 100K miles it is hard to hide.
Anyway, as far as the trip goes the mileage you add will be trivial. Just be sure it is not losing coolant and the oil is good. An oil change before you go is not a bad idea.
Well the higher amount of kilometres an engine has, means the more amount of wear and tear the engine has accumulated.
Everything mechanical is like a ticking time bomb, over time and time parts wear down and fail, the only way to stay around this problem is to service and maintain your engine every so often, change parts regularly.
A car with 5000k's is nothing, you should be able to drive for a long time on that, remember to stock up on replacement fan belts, radiator hoses, spare tyres, oil filters, a spare battery etc... before going out on a long road trip.
km on a car is the only gauge we have for how much the car has been used. it's not perfect since city km are way worse for a car than highway km. A family who is used to using cars in the city, and ditching them after 100-150k would be uneasy in a car that has over 200k. but a country family or one that travels a lot would be comfortable in a car up to 300k. after that it really just depends on the quality of the car and how well it's been maintained, which only the caretaker of the car knows.
I've never even owned a car that had as low as 120k km!
Nothing wrong with a car with time miles, with proper maintenance that means it's a good car. Have a neighbor just bought a brand new Ford. Only as 1000 miles on it and broke down had to get tired of Ford dealer. I told her now she know what Ford means found on road dead. So drive it have fun
