Why do Republican voters support Trump’s tariffs on the EU for steel and aluminum?
If the EU imposes tariffs, as well, in return such as on food, wouldn’t voters be bearing the increased cost eventually? How does this save American voters money?
People hear Trump reminding us we are the best most feared and mightiest nation and we are not getting a good deal , so he wants tariffs on steel and aluminum. Because he has been loud and bragging the EU countries say they will put tariffs on our products. Everyone is waiting to see who blinks first.
The people who support Trump are not known for being able to manifest independent thought.
(If you think that this mean they are possibly quite stupid, that is essentially correct)
So, they just support it because they are not smart enough to see the implications.
If the US was importing steel and aluminum, it is because the importer was saving money (and in the case of aluminum, the US lacks the capability to replace the imports anyway). The real value of steel and aluminum is in the *transformation*. Do you buy any aluminum directly? Any steel? Of course not. Aluminum and steel are always raw material that are then transformed into finished products, which are several times more valuable.
2) make American companies more competitive so that production will be reshored and/or expanded
America was built on tariffs.
Clothing is an easy example. Want to rebuild a textile industry in the US? Then slap tarrifs on foreign clothes. That makes it more competitive to start a clothing company here. American workers...likely unionized...working and spending and investing their money at home. Better than supporting some dictatorship overseas using child labor.
Hell...you could even tie it to social programs. The tarrif money could be tied to paying for clothing for poor children. Or you could lower tarrifs for countries that don't use sweat shop labor.
Liberals and conservatives should both like tarrifs.

I would guess you don't know the EU > already < taxes imports from the USA.
they are clueless
Simple. Did you ever, as a kid, play Follow the Leader? Cons never grew up and learned to think for themselves.

That is what republicans want.

I actually don't support it. But that's OK. I don't expect to support every single thing Trump does.
And so far, this is the first thing out of many that he's not agreed with me on.
it is a TAX on americans
Food?
So I would have to pay more for my Haribo Gummie Bears?
We get very little from Europe besides luxury goods.
I don't care if it "saves voters money."
What do tarrifs do?
1) add money to the Treasury
2) make American companies more competitive so that production will be reshored and/or expanded
