There is no way for anyone who does not know this individual to even guess why he might have said this. It could be he was joking. It could be he was drunk. It could be he was trying to annoy you. It could be. . . anything. You know him, so you would be in a much better position to guess.
Of course, you need not guess. If you want to know why he said something, why don't you just ask him? He might not tell you the truth, of course, but that will at least give you more information than a stranger could possibly give you. Asking in these kinds of circumstances is usually the best policy.
