The worker's unions were not as well organized as later unions would be. The right to collective bargaining was not yet guaranteed by law. The corporations often resorted to violence, frequently provided by police and troops. The corporations had more money and could wait out strike if needed.
From old stories i heard, when big rich corperations would "miscalculate" the payments to the workers (corporations would often pocket the money for themselves) workers went on strike beacuse they wernt being paid for their work, after a while the corporations got tired of the strikes and needed work to be on scedual,so they would all of the sudden "find" the cash and pay the workers interest plus what they earned. I hope this helps but i would do more reasearch just in case
