It will depend alot on what needs to be fertilized. Many plants don't need much more than good soil to keep them healthy. Many plants needs much nitrogen to put on a good display. Most homeowners over-fertilize their plants, especially lawns. It is so easy to compost and I can't think of anything that does more good for more kinds of plants than compost. It improves the water-retention abilities of the soil as well as providing nutrients. I would never use a chemical fertilizer when I could compost for free. You can add compost any time of year to any kind of plant and see the results come growing season.
