Julius Caesar's role in the collapse of the Republic was in being assassinated in 44 BCE. Thereafter Augustus succeeded him and the Empire began.
Caesar instigated a civil war in the Republic which ended with him being installed as Dictator and the political prestige of the Senate being greatly reduced. After his assassination the Republic fell into renewed warfare most notably between his heir Caesar Augustus and his friend Mark Antony. This warfare ended with the triumph of Augustus who proclaimed himself Emperor.
