At New Years Eve there was a big crowd gathering in Koeln in front of a prominent church called the Koellner Dom. People were celebrating the New Year, burning fire works and consuming alcohol. What happened when things got out of hand, was that some females were surrounded by males, they grabbed their private parts and stole their phones. When police tried to interfere, they were attacked as well.

The "real" scandal was, that the police first said that everything was peace full which was a lie. The Major of Koeln held an emergency meeting which also was attended by the President of the Police. After the meeting, the Major met the press and declared that until this time it wasn't sure where they attacker were. It was just reported by the victims, that the attackers looked like North Africans and Arabs..

Now they revealed the identity of 31 men. Involved were mostly Algerians and Moroccans beside (don't remember the exact number), men from Iran, Iraq, Kosovo and even 2 Germans and 1 American. 14 of these men are asylum seekers.

To make a long story short, the President of the police got fired, politicians discuss tighter certain laws, more police presence will apply in the future at public events and many people on Yahoo preaching pure hate.

That, more or less, is the current situation.

I'm sorry to say, but it was refugees from Muslim countries, no sense denying it. They even tried to cover it up, but it didn't work.
