There is a LONG list of Christian and other believing scientists who contributed great advances to the history of science, so this assumption that christians have not contributed to science is just wrong.
Publicly it suppressed heliocentric views. Had a chilling effect, i would say. Privately the Church sponsored many scientific thinkers and eventually came around to this reality. Galileo himself wasn't exonerated until recently...

They tortured Galileo half to death and held him under house arrest for suggesting that the earth orbitted the sun.
They tortured and killed "scientists" which put a bit of a damper on scientific research!
But us guys are just beginning to start to get our own back!
