It's certainly pushed the Republican Party to the right, so much so that any candidate for a Republican nomination has to fill a certain criteria or risk not being elected. I think that's what's happening to Mitt Romney.
I think it has really polarized the discourse and made compromise less likely. It has hardened party lines and increased the rift between right and left.
