Henry james invites criticism in this quote. As he said everybody will not like any person.Certain differences will be there alwys. Keeping thwir views in mind,it is best if we review ourselves and know what we are.
He is basically saying that being popular is not something he finds pride in.
Sounds rather pompous & arrogant to me. Unless used with good humor, it's not the type of person I'd care to be around.
In other words, they don't want everyone to like them; they're just so great they can't help it.
