I think what he means is that America has a good thing going with the 'Bill of Rights' and we should preserve the original intent of the document. Don't let government louse it up.
It may have something to do with the fact that we as a society have stood by and allowed our principles, the ones this great country was founded on to be compromised. We have slipped into the tank with regard to the fundamentals of caring for our fellow man, keeping the family unit intact, insuring our children's future including a good and correct education, and being willing to stand up for Liberty and Justice for all. We have sunk to being small groups of people in the same country that only want to be recognized as part of that group, not as Americans. That is what always mad the difference between us and every other country in the world.
If you look at everything we do now, you can proudly admit you are gay and have a demonstration, say what you want, where you want, and it's ok if that infringes on someone else's values and beliefs. Not picking on the Gay community, but as an example it works, it could just as easily be an ethnic group.
God and Freedom is what this country was founded on, NOT the Select few, whoever that may be, Christians, Muslims, Black, Hispanic, American Indian, etc. We we all allowed an opportunity to practice what we believed freely as long as it doesn't infringe on others rights. We don't have that now. And that is just looking at America internally. What have we always stood for and done in the World community..... We have been that light of shining freedom and democracy that the rest of the world could look to and aspire to be. We are no longer that, we fear to hurt every ones' feelings, no matter how much pain it causes. We are cowards that are afraid to keep standing for what we believe in, in hopes of not hurting any ones feelings out there. Guess what, that makes us no better than a doormat for all the hate and war mongers of the world. I don't care if that means China, or some whacked ut freak hiding in the mountains, we are chickenshits to the point we no longer care to protect ourselves or others.

He got it exactly right. Our founding fathers tried something that no culture or country had ever done before. Given freedom to the citizens of a country with limited government involvement. Unfortunately those in power as well as prior administrations have strayed from our founding principles have shied away and pulled away from the very things that have made our country great! The more socialist our country gets, the more we sink into mediocrity and the problems that the rest of the world has.
I'm sure that the current administration scoffed at the Dali Lama's remarks, probably saying that he has no idea what he's talking about. But if you really LOOK at American history from a non bias perspective, you'll see that the Dali Lama hit it right on the nose.
He was referring to the core fundamental values that our nation was founded on by our founding fathers. The belief that we as people have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Unfortunately, greed in politics on a local and federal level are taking away our freedom and independence as American citizens. We are being forced to accept our government greed and forced to have to pay for it. This country was not founded on capitalism. It was founded on the premise that we as people would have a say in how our country is being run and by whom. A say in how our tax dollars were being used and allocated. Seemingly, these core ancestral principles have been lost on modern day politics.
Furthermore, it is our founding fathers that formed our political system and warned that in the future there would come a time that Americans would need to rise up and defend our constitutional rights, dependence and democracy from political usurpation and corruption. They state that when or if we lose these freedoms that it is not only our right, but our duty to abolish or alter aspects of government that need changing. After all, it is supposed to be the government of the people, by the people, for the people.
In the Declaration Of Independence it states...We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

the Dali Lama is a great man. only liberals would defend China to one of the great minds and champions for peace of our times.
he meant that we were pioneers for true justice and liberty. freedom is something we have taken for granted. no one knows the importance of freedom more than a tibetan.
I think he meant the principles of liberty which started this country, even though some of our founders were hypocritical about them, were good, but that since that time we've managed to really screw thing up pretty badly.
Sounds like what we grew up on, not what Obama's dream of America is.
